Southern hospitality!

Khloe Kardashian admitted to E! News that hubby Lamar Odom‘s move to the Dallas Mavericks was “an unexpected change,” but the Texas team is eager to welcome the former L.A. Laker to the Lone Star state!

PHOTOS: Khloe and Lamar’s cutest moments

“Your locker is ready, Mr. Lamar Odom,” the Dallas Mavericks tweeted Monday, including a shot of an empty locker ready for the 32-year-old’s gear.

“Need some candy in there,” Khloe, 27, responded.

Odom’s new team asked Khloe, “Does Lamar have a preference?”

PHOTOS: Look back at Khloe and Lamar’s wedding day

Soon, Khloe will be able to spruce up Odom’s locker herself. “As soon as I pack our house up, I’ll be there,” she tweeted Monday. “I ride or die for my Lam! It’s where I go… It’s who I am with.”

PHOTOS: Khloe’s style transformation

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about Dallas and the Mavs,” Khloe told E! News. “Can’t wait to join my hubby there and get to know the city and all the wonderful people there.”

PHOTOS: Southern superstars

So will the NBA coach ever appear on a Kardashian-themed reality show? “I’ve never been one to rule anything out,” he said. “I would guess it would be a long shot to be asked.”

While the NBA lockout teetered on disaster for the league, it did produce one excellent consequence: the Dallas Mavericks will open the season at home against the Miami Heat on Christmas day to open the season — and raise their championship banner prior to the game. The lamest member of the superfriends in Miami, Chris Bosh, thinks that the ceremony is going to suck.

Bosh, who is a Dallas native, thought that there were too many Mavericks fans during the offseason as well.

Bosh spent only a week back home in Dallas during the offseason, partly to enjoy the Miami surroundings with his wife, but also to avoid the negativity from fans back in Texas — fans, he added, that weren’t so abundant when he was growing up.

“I didn’t want to hear all the fans,” Bosh joked. “But it’s funny because there wasn’t a lot of Mavericks fans when I was a kid. But now all of a sudden, everybody’s a Mavericks fan.”

That’s funny. Before the superfriends teamed up in Miami, did anybody care about the Heat? As if teaming up with two superstars in Miami, in a league dominated by player interest more so than team interest, isn’t going to invite bandwagon fans.

Maybe Bosh can have a few tissues ready for LeBron James when they raise the banner, since it’s going to suck so much – it wouldn’t be the first time LeBron cried in Dallas.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Despite reports that other bidders have been approved for the bankrupt Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League, including Dallas Mavericks owner and Forbes 400 member Mark Cuban and former Texas Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg, the only bid for the hockey team has come from Vancouver businessman Tom Gaglardi.

The deadline for submitting applications to bid passed with the following offer from Gaglardi: $50 million cash to get rid of the debt at the Stars level. $100 million of paper to wipe out the Tom Hicks level debt which is about $260 million. The $100 million of paper will be reduced by $15 or $20 million (operating costs). The creditors also get about $70 million cash from the sale of the Texas Rangers that is yet to be distributed.

Gaglardi’s offer is for the Stars and half of American Airlines Center. The other 50% of the arena is owned by Cuban. Last December we valued the Stars at $227 million.

It is still possible for other bidders to emerge. The Stars will be sent through a prepackaged bankruptcy hearing before the sale is final. The bankruptcy trustee is charged with making sure that the bankruptcy plan is fair to creditors and it’s that judgment that will determine how quickly this team exits bankruptcy.

Not much else going on in the NBA world today.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Sporting News says we’re the number one sports city for 2011 and writer Matt Crossman says that’s because the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Championship title.

Combine that with the Texas Rangers ride to the World Series in 2010 (and so far again in 2011, advancing to the ALCS) along with TCU winning the Rose Bowl and you’ve got the top sports city in the country.

Crossman says we’re number one despite the Cowboys being sub-par the year we hosted the Superbowl.

He also credits our sports success to Texas Motor Speedway, hosting both NASCAR and IndyCar races and the MLS Cup runner-up FC Dallas professional soccer team in Frisco.

Dallas beat out Boston, which won the Stanley Cup in 2011 for the top spot. Philadelphia is third, Chicago is fourth and New York is fifth.

Matt Crossman talks with KRLD’s Barbara Schwarz about the list

You can see the complete list of the Sporting News “Best Sports Cities” here.

(Editors note: We know that “Dallas” is more than just what the Sports Network thinks it is. It’s the entire Metroplex – including Fort Worth, Arlington, Frisco and all of the surrounding areas.)

 IDG News Service —
His Miami Heat team lost the NBA finals to the Dallas Mavericks last month and now Dwyane Wade is headed back to a Texas court, but not to play basketball.

Instead of facing Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, Wade is going after currently unknown perpetrators who in recent years hacked a variety of his personal online accounts.

Wade, one of the best players in the National Basketball Association (NBA), named as defendants 50 generic “John Does” in a complaint filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

Wade filed the civil lawsuit in Texas because a substantial amount of the hacking activity allegedly initiated in the state, where in 2006 Wade led the Miami Heat to its first and only championship, beating the Mavericks.

If it were proven that the alleged hacking was indeed carried out from Texas, it will be interesting to see if part of the motivation was to get back at Wade over the basketball rivalry.

Wade alleges that between 2007 and last month, malicious hackers broke into various of his online accounts, including a Yahoo e-mail account and a Twitter account, and accessed and misused sensitive information and communications contained in them.

Wade is seeking a temporary and permanent injunction forbidding the malicious hackers from further accessing and using any of the compromised personal and business data. He also seeks to recover unspecified damages based on the harm inflicted by the hacking.

The player alleges that the defendants created mayhem after compromising his online accounts, changing account settings, including his password, and using the accounts to impersonate him for malicious purposes, such as threatening and insulting other people, and deceiving them into disclosing confidential information.

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, suffered a legal setback on Monday when a Dallas federal judge threw out one of his defenses in a Securities and Exchange Commission insider-trading lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater said Cuban failed to show that the SEC had investigated him improperly, which would have allowed him to argue that the regulator had “unclean hands”. The SEC had asked the judge to block Cuban from using such a defense in court.

“Cuban has failed to allege facts that give the SEC fair notice that the misconduct on which he relies resulted in prejudice to his defense of the enforcement action that rises to a constitutional level,” the judge wrote.

“This is fatal to his unclean hands defense.”

The SEC sued Cuban in 2008, alleging that he sold his 6.3 percent stake in Mamma.com in June 2004 after learning confidentially that the Montreal-based search engine company was planning a stock offering. It said Cuban’s sale allowed him to avoid more than $750,000 of losses.

Lyle Roberts, a lawyer for Cuban, said SEC Inspector General David Kotz was separately looking into Cuban’s allegations of improper conduct by the SEC. He characterized the judge’s ruling on Monday as a “minor” issue.

“We have a very long list of defenses, the key being that it didn’t happen,” Roberts said. “Mr. Cuban did not enter into any confidentiality agreement or violate any such agreement.”

A federal district judge dismissed the SEC case in July 2009, saying Cuban did not qualify as an insider, and at most had entered a confidentiality agreement with Mamma.com rather than an agreement not to trade.

A federal appeals court in New Orleans reinstated the lawsuit last September, ordering Cuban to face the SEC allegations.

Fitzwater did not take any position on whether Cuban’s allegations of investigative misconduct by the SEC had merit.

Those allegations include witness intimidation, and proceeding with a legal action prior to completing an investigation.

The case is SEC v. Cuban, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas, No. 08-02050.

So…I’m face down on a bar floor. (I know, sounds like the beginning of any fight I’d ever get in – believe me, I wouldn’t win).

June 20, 2006 – a day that I thought would have to live in my mind as one of the worst days in my sports memory. Jason Terry’s pull up 3 missed, and Dallas had lost 4 straight games – and the NBA finals – to the Heat.

When he missed I kinda just collapsed onto the bar floor, the reality setting in that that was about as close as the Mavericks would ever get to an NBA title.

I had lived through the worst years of Mavs basketball – which was pretty much all of them (I was 2 when they were founded) – and it just felt like that was their chance.

Then 2007 happened. First round exit after winning 67 games. Seemed about right as a Mavs fan.

And it was back to torturous results from there.

Fast forward to June 12 of this year – and instead of face down on a bar floor – I found myself on a “bar-like” stool. In the UT press box, cutting highlights and sound from their Super Regionals win over Arizona State.

I wasn’t sure how the show would go that night. I’m sure the other media members laughed at me. I was trying to cut, but also trying to watch the final seconds tick off the clock. It wasn’t easy.

Let’s be honest – it was a long 1,819 days between the Heat winning in Dallas and the Mavs winning in Miami. As you’d expect though - well worth the wait.

As a Dallas native the four Dallas teams have long been my favorite. I’ve now seen the Mavs, Cowboys and Stars win titles (and the Rangers came darn close last year).

It took 12 long years for the city to nail down a title (Stars ’99, Mavs ’11).

And even a month later, I still haven’t come down off the high of the Mavs winning. It’s a pretty sweet feeling I won’t let go of for a long time.

Or at least until next year’s NBA playoffs. (Sidenote: don’t expect me face down on a bar floor any time soon. Lesson learned.)

By the time an NBA team wins a championship the entire world has converged on the city and media await every player at every turn. That was certainly the case for the Dallas Mavericks, who won the hearts of NBA fans worldwide as a group of classy, hard-working veterans began their quest to upset the most over-hyped team on the planet in the Miami HEAT. When the global media turns its attention on the last two teams standing in postseason play there are very few stories that go untold, few stones that go unturned as everyone looks for some unique angle to cover. It isn’t always that way, however.

For the bulk of the regular season the press corps covering a given NBA team is relatively small. There are the steadfast beat writers, some local TV and radio personalities, a few national personalities from outlets like ESPN and HOOPSWORLD, and then there are the Associated Press folks. It is one of these AP writers who brings us the latest release from Sports Publishing, an in-depth inside look at some of the greatest stories in the history of the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks.

Jaime Aron has been the Texas sports editor for the AP since 1999, and now he brings sports fans an updated edition of Tales From The Dallas Mavericks Locker Room that includes stories in and around the 2011 championship, and it’s a book NBA fans won’t want to miss.

Aron’s book takes us back to the beginning, with the Mavericks as an expansion franchise in 1978. After failed attempts to bring first the Milwaukee Bucks and then the Kansas City Kings to Dallas, the league finally approved an expansion and the Dallas Mavericks were born. Meet the members of the brain trust who brought the fledgling organization to life, including owner Donald Carter, GM Norm Sonju and first head coach Dick Motta.

Read about the Mavs’ first draft pick, Kiki Vandeweghe, who resented being chosen by the expansion Mavs and eventually forced a trade rather than play for Dallas. It was an inauspicious start for Dallas, but it resulted in their drafting Rolando Blackman the following year, and he turned out to be an incredibly important piece of their franchise from that day forward. The story of how the Mavs then stumbled upon Brad Davis while scouting someone else on the advice of George Karl is just one of the tasty nuggets awaiting you in Aron’s book.

After a trip down memory lane, in which he recounts some of the highlights of the Mavs’ inaugural season, Aron introduces us to the next franchise cornerstone, a young man named Mark Aguirre. With Aguirre, Blackman and Davis in place, Dallas was able to build a strong relationship with their fan base, one that still exists to this day. Soon Derek Harper would join the mix, the Mavericks had an All-Star in Aguirre, and the playoffs came to town.

The 1984 draft will forever go down as a huge missed opportunity for Dallas. They could have drafted Charles Barkley and John Stockton that year, but they passed on both in acquiring two much less notable players. Find out who they were and why the Mavs did what they did in the book . . .no spoilers here!

Sadly, Mark Aguirre would not find long-term success in Dallas, and it wasn’t long before the team decided to trade him. In fact, Aguirre was nearly part of the first-ever multi-league trade. The Mavs had lengthy discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers about a trade that would have brought James Worthy to Dallas and sent Aguirre and Dallas Sidekicks soccer star Tatu to LA. Only a death in the family prevented that deal from going down. It turned out to be a good thing for Dallas, as Aguirre was a huge part of the team that won its first-ever division championship in 1986-87.

That same team also became the first #2 seed to lose to a #7 seed, a collapse that would cost Dick Motta is job. The Mavericks would never win a championship under his replacement, John MacLeod, but they did make it to the Western Conference Finals before one mess after another led to an era of mediocrity for the Mavericks, all of which is detailed in the book.

The Roy Tarpley era was cut all too short by drug suspensions, several head coaches came and went, Jim Jackson, Jason Kidd, and Jamal Mashburn followed Blackman, Davis and Aguirre, and the Mavericks flirted with respectability once again before their personalities clashed and forced them to scrap it all and start over once again . . .this time with a new owner, a new head coach, and a new franchise player.

Mark Cuban and Don Nelson were the keys to turning the Mavericks around, as were their early draft picks – Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki. They very nearly had a third cornerstone in Leon Smith, but his tragic story set the franchise back instead of catapulting them forward. After a very brief flirtation with “shoeless” Dennis Rodman, Michael Finley would finally become the third star the Mavericks needed, and his arrival began a string of 50+ win seasons that is still alive today. While Cuban made plenty of his own headlines with a persistent series of fines, his team climbed the ranks of the Western Conference, even as Nash was traded, Finley was paid to go win a championship with the rival San Antonio Spurs, and a Coach of the Year was born and then fired. Through it all Dirk Nowitzki became the indomitable force that made the Mavericks contenders, which brings us to the end of the book.

A trio of well-respected veterans in Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Jason Terry would help the Mavericks capture their first-ever NBA Championship, the intimate details of which are captured in Aron’s book.

The only knock on Tales From The Dallas Mavericks Locker Room is that the final section, for which it was re-released in current form, glosses over much of the historic 2010-11 season and the championship run. If you’re looking for an in-depth look at the title run itself, you won’t find it here. However, if you’re looking for a book that details at great length the birth, rise, fall and resurrection of an NBA franchise, look no further. The Dallas Mavericks are the NBA Champions, and what better way to celebrate it than with a book that tells the entire story of the franchise?

Mavericks’ president Donnie Nelson announces the Mavs’ 20121 draft picks. (Will Martin)

The 2011 NBA Draft was comprised of two rounds and a total of 60 picks, 30 first-round picks and 30 second-round picks. The Mavericks entered the draft with one first round pick (26th overall) and one second round pick (57th overall). This marked just the fifth time in the last decade that the Mavericks have owned a pick in each of the two rounds. The last time was the 2000 draft.

Entering this year’s draft with two picks placed the Mavericks ahead of roughly one-third of the (9) NBA teams that do not have at least two selections. While Dallas was doing well by still owning both of its picks, the Mavericks watched seven teams go to the podium for more than just the allotted two selections. Cleveland (two firsts and two seconds) and the LA Lakers, ( four seconds) each stockpiled four picks, while Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, Sacramento, and Washington all entered the night with three picks apiece.

While Dallas was ahead of the game by owning a first-round pick, the Atlanta, LA Clippers, LA Lakers, Memphis, Miami, New Orleans and Orlando are without a selection in the first round In contrast, seven teams had two picks in the opening round: Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Minnesota, Utah and Washington.

Of the 15 players on the 2010-2011-Championship roster, an astounding 13 were former first-round draft picks (Rodriguez Beaubois, Corey Brewer, Caron Butler. Tyson Chandler, Brendan Haywood, Dominquez Jones, Jason Kidd, Ian Mahinmi, Shawn Marion, Dirk Nowitzki, DeShawn Stevenson, Peja Stojakovic, Jason Terry). Kidd and Chandler share the honor of being the highest-drafted Maverick (second overall). Only one Maverick was selected in the second round (Brian Cardinal) and one was undrafted (Jose Juan Barea)

Teams were not permitted to trade draft picks after 1 p.m. Dallas time on Thursday, June 23 (draft day). Once the draft began, teams were allowed to trade draft rights of players they selected. The 1 p.m. deadline applies only to trades involving 2011 draft picks and does not prohibit teams from conducting trades between 1 p.m. and the start of the draft that do not involve 2011 draft picks.

Draft eligibility is explained this way: A player shall be eligible for selection in the NBA draft if the player (A) is or will be at least 19 years of age during the calendar year in which the Draft is held, and (B) with respect to a player who is not an international player, at least one NBA season has elapsed since the player’s graduation from high school or, if the player did not graduate from high school, since the graduation of the class with which the player would have graduated had he graduated from high school.

In the first round last night the Mavericks drafted University of Texas guard Jordan Hamilton, but traded him quickly to Portland for veteran swingman Rudy Fernandez. Fernandez’s ability to play point guard and small forward will be an immediate asset to the Mavericks.

Fernandez hails from Spain and at 6’ 6” the 26-year-old brings with him a sweet 3-point-shot that can only enhance the Mavs scoring potential.

Donnie Nelson, the president of Mavericks operation stated at the announcement, “We wanted the best caliber player, and we got youth and experience.”

The Mavericks also sent their second choice selection Congan Tanguy Ngombo to the Blazers and received Portland 2007 draftee Petteri Koponen.

Koponen is a point guard from Finland who will remain overseas next year. It is easy to see that the Mavericks organization is building for the future as present older Mavericks talent starts to wane by drafting young, experienced players to develop for the future.

Gotta run!.
