In 2010-11, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks met in the Western Conference Finals, the winner getting a chance to play in the NBA Finals. The Mavericks won the series and went on to win the NBA Championship. It was the second year that the Thunder made it to the postseason and they did better each year.

Dirk Nowitzki
Wikimedia Commons

Now in 2010-11, the Thunder are ready to make that next step towards their destiny. They have started the new season with a 3-0 record, looking like the long NBA lockout didn’t affect them one bit. However, the Mavericks are headed in the other direction, sitting at 0-2, they have not won a game since they won the championship last season.

Kevin Durant leads the Thunder once again. In three games, Durant has surpassed 30 points each time, the first player in franchise history, Seattle and Oklahoma City combined, to open a season with three straight 30 point games. If Durant hits 30 points again against Dallas, he will be the first NBA player since Kobe Bryant (2005-06) to open a season with four consecutive 30-point games.

James Harden is the second leading scorer, the most valuable sixth man in the NBA. Harden heads in averaging 18.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game. Despite not starting, Harden still averages over 30 minutes a game. Russell Westbrook fell hard in Week 3, going 0-of-13 from the field, but still averages 15.3 points, 6.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals a game.

Dirk Nowitzki leads the Mavericks once again this season, the defending 2010-11 MVP. He only averages 20.5 points in the first two games this season with only 4.5 rebounds. Outside of Nowitzki, Jason Terry (14.5), Sean Williams (12.0) and Jason Kidd (10.5) are the only double digit scorers.

Newcomers Vince Carter (8.0 points) and Lamar Odom (5.0 points, 5.5 rebounds) have not found their comfort level yet in Dallas.

From the look, the Thunder have outperformed the Mavericks in every area of play this season. In the preseason, Oklahoma City swept Dallas in both their meetings. If they beat the Mavericks now, the Thunder will be 4-0 for the first time since 2003-04 when they played in Seattle. The game against Dallas tips off at 7:00 p.m. CT on December 29 in Oklahoma City.

(Sports Network) – Pro basketball is a little different than the other major
sports.

Ask any old time baseball fan to talk about the greatest hitter of all-time
and one name will be at the top of most lists, Ted Williams. This despite the
fact that “Teddy Ballgame” never captured a World Series championship.

Ask the Baby Boomers who the greatest player is and more often than not you
will hear the name Barry Bonds, warts and all. Steroids, a surly personality
and the lack of a championship are just white noise in the background.

Over in the NFL when you talk about pure passers, Dan Marino will get tabbed
again and again even though the Pittsburgh native possesses none of the
Lombardi Trophies that have made “The Steel City” famous.

Basketball? It’s not that observers don’t recognize the greatness of players
like Elgin Baylor, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton and Patrick
Ewing but the fact that they all lack hardware disqualifies them when people
start handing out the mythical titles of “the greatest of all-time.”

Dirk Nowitzki was more than happy to graduate from that club last June as he
and the Dallas Mavericks finally got over the hump and brought the Larry
O’Brien Trophy to North Texas when they topped LeBron James and the Miami Heat
in the NBA Finals.

His reward?

Try and do it again without veteran contributors like Tyson Chandler, J.J.
Barea and Peja Stojakovic.

On paper the Mavs have actually improved their skill level, bringing in
big man Lamar Odom and high-scoring swingman Vince Carter but this is a club
that often won 50-plus games and came up short in the postseason until they
acquired a few tough-minded defensive players like Chandler, Caron Butler
and DeShawn Stevenson.

2010-11 Results: 57-25, second in Southwest; Won NBA championship.

ADDITIONS: F Lamar Odom, G Vince Carter, G Delonte West, F Brandan Wright

PROJECTED STARTING FIVE:

PG- Jason Kidd
SG- Vince Carter
SF- Shawn Marion
PF- Dirk Nowitzki
C- Brendan Haywood

KEY RESERVES: G Jason Terry, F Lamar Odom, G Rodrigue Beaubois, C Ian Mahinmi,
G Delonte West

FRONTCOURT: Nowitzki was unquestionably the best player in the postseason last
year and swiped the mantle of best closer as well. His rainbow fadeaway is
unstoppable at times and made Charles Barkley gush “Nobody can guard that
guy.” His coach, Rick Carlisle, even called him one of the 10 greatest
players ever. With his terrific shooting range and basketball smarts, the
bread and butter of Nowitzki’s game has always been the ability to use his 7-
foot, 245-pound frame to overmatch defenders. Never a top-tier on-ball
defender. Nowitzki has also developed into a solid help defender and is much
tougher these days.

The aging Shawn Marion remains a tireless defender and solid, albeit
unorthodox, offensive player.

“Shawn is a guy that has had such an underrated career,” Carlisle said. “If
you look at his stats for his career, you know, he’s top five in almost every
Phoenix Suns category. He’s been a franchise type player for a lot of years.

Brendan Haywood takes over in the middle for Chandler and is a big body with
impressive length but just isn’t as tough at Chandler and doesn’t bring the
same type of intimidation on a nightly basis. Haywood also tends to struggle
with foul trouble and has always been inconsistent. The lengthy Odom will also
get plenty of minutes in the pivot.

BACKCOURT: The ageless Jason Kidd is back for another year running the point,
The future Hall Of Famer is a true quarterback who thinks pass first and
excels in finding scorers in the spots they like. He is, however, lacking
quickness at this stage, although his hands at the defensive end may be the
best in the game.

“He’s one of our superstars. It’s as simple as that,” Carlisle said when
talking about Kidd. “When he’s on the court, it elevates our overall
confidence, and then he impacts so many areas. You’re talking about a guy
that’s one of the greatest ever to play.”

Carter figures to step in at shooting guard which will enable Carlisle to keep
Jason Terry on the bench. Once one the best five players in the game, Carter
has regressed mightily over the past few years but could have a bit of a
resurgence here since he will rarely be the focus of opposing defenses.

BENCH: If Terry isn’t the best bench player in the league, Odom might be so
this is a real strength for Dallas.

“The Jet” has been Dallas’ top scoring option after Nowitzki for years and
can really take over a game when the jumper is falling. Terry also gives
the Mavs a second competent closer in tight situations.

Odom is one of the more gifted players in all of basketball and can beat you
in a host of ways. He can take you from the inside or outside on the
offensive end and torture you with his length as a defender. He’s also the
rare 6-foot-11 player that can handle the ball and beat you as a playmaker.
Part of the reason Odom fell out of favor in Hollywood his reality television
show in which he co-stars with wife Khloe Kardashian and his commitment could
be an issue.

Veteran Delonte West, a two-way guard that has had a host of personal problems
in the past, can really help at both ends if his head is on straight while the
team has always liked the athleticism of Roddy Beaubois, who missed most of
last season due to injury.

COACHING: Carlisle has a solid offensive and defensive pedigree and is one of
the more underrated coaches in the game. He has morphed the Mavs from a run-
and-gun team that had to outscore you to win into a more well-balanced bunch
that can get the job done in a number of different ways.

OUTLOOK: Many considered Chandler, one of the best low-post defenders in the
NBA, as the last piece to he Mavs’ championship puzzle and the 7-footer has
moved on to New York.

Haywood and Odom will be asked to fill that void and it remains to be seen if
Carlisle can overcome the loss of his defensive anchor. On paper the Mavs
traded the defense that got them over the hump for more firepower. That’s like
a “Back to the Future” scenario for Dallas and one that’s likely to result in
an all too familiar denouncement in the Metroplex — an excellent regular
season team that doesn’t have the mettle to navigate the treacherous
postseason waters.

OKLAHOMA CITY — If Tuesday’s 87-83 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder is any indication, the Dallas Mavericks have some work to do before they can even think about successfully defending their NBA title.

Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd played in their first and only preseason game, but the results were still the same for the Mavs. The Thunder torched the Mavs with suffocating defense and a series of fast-break dunks en route to winning their second preseason game over Dallas in three nights.

“Overall, we’re going to have to be a lot better. We know that,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. “I like our first quarter, I like the latter stages of the fourth quarter — we battled.

“The part in between has been rough, and so we’ve got to work through it.”

Oklahoma City led by as many as 23 points — 74-51 late in the third quarter — before a 30-13 surge by the Mavericks in the fourth made the final score respectable.

It was as if the Thunder was trying to send a message after it was ousted by the Mavericks in five games last season in the Western Conference Finals. But the Mavericks were coy about a loss in the second of two meaningless preseason games.

“Our goal can’t be to be the best team right now,” said Nowitzki, who was 2 of 10 from the floor with six points in 23 minutes. “Our goal is to get better from game to game and get used to each other more, and hopefully be the best team again when it comes to April, May and June.”

What’s really foremost on the Mavericks’ minds is Sunday’s regular-season opener at home against the Miami Heat — the team Dallas thumped to win last year’s NBA championship.

“We’re five days away right now,” forward Shawn Marion said. “We’re keeping our bodies ready and our minds right.

“We’re going to make another run at this. I think we have the talent in this locker room and the mental approach it’s going to take to go out there and get it again.”

Jerome Randle led the Mavericks with 17 points in 18 minutes, Brandan Wright had 12 and Marion added 10. And there were moments when Lamar Odom, Nowitzki and Marion were on the floor at the same time.

“It was cool. I’ve just got to get used to it as time goes on,” said Odom, who collected eight points and three rebounds. “You play the game, you play it to win it.”

Granted, the Mavericks were not at full strength Tuesday night, with guards Jason Terry and Delonte West sitting out because of illness. And Vince Carter, who is expected to be the starting shooting guard against the Heat, also did not play.

Still, the second loss to the Thunder in three days — OKC won 106-92 on Sunday in Dallas — has to be cause for concern.

“Look, we were down two guys tonight, which makes it more challenging,” Carlisle said. “But there’s some good spots to the game and then there’s some areas that we’re looking at and saying, ’Hey, we’re going to be struggling if it goes on like this.’.”

Dallas Mavericks’ German power forward Dirk Nowitzki, MVP in the Mavericks’ NBA finals triumph in June, is not ruling out the possibility of a move to Europe if the current NBA lock-out continues.

‘This week we are going back to work, Dirk has not touched the ball since the European Championship at the end of September,’ declared Nowitzki’s personal coach Holger Geschwindner, who also said the player was ‘ruling nothing out, even if he has no concrete ideas’ about a switch to Europe.

‘At the moment, Dirk is out of shape. We are going to work hard over the nex two weeks,’ added Geschwindner.

‘If he goes anywhere, he will be going there for the whole season.’

However, Nowitzki’s mentor has not yet abandoned all hope of the NBA season eventually getting underway.

‘There is still a small chance of a breakthrough in the negotiations with the NBA. If not, we will have to find an alternative solution,’ he admitted.

A number of European clubs, particularly in Germany, have already sounded out the 33-year-old.

‘We have to keep all options open and keep an eye on what’s happening abroad,’ Nowitzki said at the end of October.

‘If the lock-out continues, it is something I will really have to think about.’

The failure of owners and players to agree upon a new collective bargaining agreement is responsible for the ongoing NBA lock-out.

Sunday, Sep. 11, 2011

VILNIUS — With his team on the brink of elimination, NBA star Dirk Nowitzki came through for Germany.

The Dallas Mavericks forward made four free throws in the last 19 seconds and Germany remained in contention at the FIBA European Championship by edging Turkey 73-67 on Friday.

“Sometimes it’s not always the most beautiful basketball. We only scored six points in the first quarter but the good thing was that the defense was good. We had only given up 13,” Nowitzki said after scoring 19 for Germany, 13 of them in the second half.

Germany trailed 26-23 at halftime but came up with some big points down the stretch to claim the win it needed so desperately.

“We talked at halftime about how it was one of the worst halves that we have ever played. But we were still only down three points,” Nowitzki said.

“We saw everything positively, and in the second half we really played as a team and hit some important shots. It was good enough.”

Chris Kaman, the Los Angeles Clippers center, led Germany with 20 points. He and Nowitzki had seven rebounds each.

Chicago Bulls backup center Omer Asik, coming back from a broken left fibula, led Turkey with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Nowitzki, the MVP of the NBA Finals after taking the Mavericks past the Miami Heat for the title, is trying to take Germany to its second straight Olympics.

The two finalists from this tournament will qualify for next year’s games in London, while the next four teams will go to an additional qualifying tournament.

Germany’s progress to the quarterfinals here will depend on other results.

“We overcame the first hurdle and now we have to see what the other teams do. I hope that we can have a bit of a final on Sunday and that the place is packed,” Nowitzki said.

Spain, the defending champion, has no such worries after making the last eight with a dominant performance from the Gasol brothers in a 84-59 tour over Serbia.

Guard Nando de Colo had 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, along with three steals, to lead France to a 73-67 win over host Lithuania.

Unbeaten France will play Spain for first place in Group E on Sunday.

Germany has to beat Lithuania and hope for Turkey to defeat Serbia to advance. Lithuania’s win would leave Serbia or Turkey as the fourth team to progress.

Lithuania can’t lose big or it can also be eliminated in a three-way tie. Turkey advances if it beats Serbia and Germany loses to Lithuania.

The Gasol brothers combined for 46 points and 18 rebounds for Spain.

The pair dominated in the paint, scoring 42 of their points from close range. In one stretch in the second quarter, Pau Gasol scored seven points and Marc Gasol added four in an 11-0 run.

Spain led by as many as 29 at one point.

“To hold a team that’s been scoring 80 to under 60 is a great achievement,” Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said. “We came in with great concentration and immediately established our high-tempo game. We are still not shooting that great, that’s the only problem.”

Serbia, which was led by Nenad Krstic’s 12 points, has lost three straight games but can still advance if it beats Turkey in its final Group E game. Turkey is the only team to have beaten Spain at this year’s tournament.

Spain beat Serbia in the European final two years ago, but then lost to the Serbs in the world championship quarterfinals last year.

There is the quick update of the day.

With his team on the brink of elimination, Dirk Nowitzki delivered for Germany.

The Dallas Mavericks star made four free throws in the last 19 seconds, helping Germany beat Turkey 73-67 to stay alive at the European Championship in Lithuania.

“Sometimes it’s not always the most beautiful basketball,” said Nowitzki, who scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half. “We only scored six points in the first quarter, but the good thing was that the defence was good.”

Defending champion Spain reached the quarter-finals, routing Serbia 84-59 behind the dominant play of brothers Pau and Marc Gasol.

France downed host Lithuania 73-67, with Nando de Colo scoring 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. Tony Parker added 19 points for unbeaten France and Joakim Noah had 13 rebounds. France will play Spain for first place in Group E on Sunday.

Germany trailed 26-23 at halftime before regrouping.

“We talked at halftime about how it was one of the worst halves that we have ever played. But we were still only down three points,” Nowitzki said. “We saw everything positively, and in the second half we really played as a team and hit some important shots. It was good enough.”

Los Angeles Clippers center Chris Kaman had 20 points for Germany. He and Nowitzki had seven rebounds each. Chicago Bulls backup centre Omer Asik, coming back from a broken lower left leg, led Turkey with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Nowitzki, the MVP of the NBA finals after taking the Mavericks past Miami for the title, is trying to take Germany to its second straight Olympics. The two finalists from this tournament will qualify for next year’s London Games. The next four teams will go to an additional qualifying tournament.

Germany will need help from others to make the quarter-finals.

“We overcame the first hurdle and now we have to see what the other teams do,” Nowitzki said. “I hope that we can have a bit of a final on Sunday and that the place is packed.”

Germany must beat Lithuania and hope for Turkey to defeat Serbia. Lithuania’s win would leave Serbia or Turkey as the fourth team to progress. Lithuania can’t lose big or it can also be eliminated in a three-way tie. Turkey advances if it beats Serbia and Germany loses to Lithuania.

Spain again rode the strength of the Gasols. Pau Gasol had 26 points and younger brother Marc had 20 to go with 10 rebounds. In one stretch in the second quarter, Pau Gasol scored seven points and Marc Gasol added four in an 11-0 run. Spain led by as many as 29.

“To hold a team that’s been scoring 80 to under 60 is a great achievement,” Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said. “We came in with great concentration and immediately established our high-tempo game. We are still not shooting that great, that’s the only problem.”

Serbia, led by Nenad Krstic’s 12 points, has lost three straight matches but can still advance if it beats Turkey in its final Group E game. Turkey is the only team to have beaten Spain at this year’s tournament.

Spain beat Serbia in the European final two years ago, but then lost to the Serbs in the world championship quarter-finals last year. This time, it wasn’t a contest.

“They hurt us very badly and we didn’t defend as usual,” Serbia guard Stefan Markovic said. “Now we have to focus on the last game.”

All 12 of Spain’s players scored. Serbia was without guard Aleksandar Rasic because of a back problem. Milos Teodosic, the Serbia guard whose 3-pointer at the buzzer beat Spain at the worlds last year, was held to six points.

“We wanted to stop Teodosic and we did it,” Spain guard Jose Calderon said.

That’s all the news for today.

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP)—With his team on the brink of elimination, Dirk
Nowitzki(notes) delivered for Germany.

The Dallas Mavericks star made four free throws in the last 19 seconds,
helping Germany beat Turkey 73-67 to stay alive at the European Championship.

“Sometimes it’s not always the most beautiful basketball,” said Nowitzki,
who scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half. “We only scored six points
in the first quarter, but the good thing was that the defense was good.”

Defending champion Spain reached the quarterfinals, routing Serbia 84-59
behind the dominant play of brothers Pau and Marc Gasol(notes).

France downed host Lithuania 73-67, with Nando de Colo(notes) scoring 13 of his 21
points in the fourth quarter. Tony Parker(notes) added 19 points for unbeaten France
and Joakim Noah(notes) had 13 rebounds. France will play Spain for first place in Group
E on Sunday.

Germany trailed 26-23 at halftime before regrouping.

“We talked at halftime about how it was one of the worst halves that we
have ever played. But we were still only down three points,” Nowitzki said.
“We saw everything positively, and in the second half we really played as a
team and hit some important shots. It was good enough.”

Los Angeles Clippers center Chris Kaman(notes) had 20 points for Germany. He and
Nowitzki had seven rebounds each. Chicago Bulls backup center Omer Asik(notes), coming
back from a broken lower left leg, led Turkey with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Nowitzki, the MVP of the NBA finals after taking the Mavericks past Miami
for the title, is trying to take Germany to its second straight Olympics. The
two finalists from this tournament will qualify for next year’s London Games.
The next four teams will go to an additional qualifying tournament.

Germany will need help from others to make the quarterfinals.

“We overcame the first hurdle and now we have to see what the other teams
do,” Nowitzki said. “I hope that we can have a bit of a final on Sunday and
that the place is packed.”

Germany must beat Lithuania and hope for Turkey to defeat Serbia.
Lithuania’s win would leave Serbia or Turkey as the fourth team to progress.
Lithuania can’t lose big or it can also be eliminated in a three-way tie. Turkey
advances if it beats Serbia and Germany loses to Lithuania.

Spain again rode the strength of the Gasols. Pau Gasol(notes) had 26 points and
younger brother Marc had 20 to go with 10 rebounds. In one stretch in the second
quarter, Pau Gasol scored seven points and Marc Gasol added four in an 11-0 run.
Spain led by as many as 29.

“To hold a team that’s been scoring 80 to under 60 is a great
achievement,” Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said. “We came in with great
concentration and immediately established our high-tempo game. We are still not
shooting that great, that’s the only problem.”

Serbia, led by Nenad Krstic’s(notes) 12 points, has lost three straight matches but
can still advance if it beats Turkey in its final Group E game. Turkey is the
only team to have beaten Spain at this year’s tournament.

Spain beat Serbia in the European final two years ago, but then lost to the
Serbs in the world championship quarterfinals last year. This time, it wasn’t a
contest.

“They hurt us very badly and we didn’t defend as usual,” Serbia guard
Stefan Markovic said. “Now we have to focus on the last game.”

All 12 of Spain’s players scored. Serbia was without guard Aleksandar Rasic
because of a back problem. Milos Teodosic, the Serbia guard whose 3-pointer at
the buzzer beat Spain at the worlds last year, was held to six points.

“We wanted to stop Teodosic and we did it,” Spain guard Jose Calderon(notes)
said.

That’s all the news for today.
