The welcome banner for Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian in Dallas seems to be fading, and their series, “Khloe & Lamar,” may be headed for the loss column.

Much of the focus of the E! reality show’s upcoming season will revolve around the couple’s sudden and unexpected move after the Los Angeles Lakers’ star was traded to the world champion Dallas Mavericks. But producers now also have an unexpected story to deal with — Odom’s unimpressive performance thus far with the Mavericks, who are struggling with a 2-4 record this season.

Odom’s initially uninspired play has already sparked noisy grumbles in Dallas. In his first game, he scored only four points on one-for-six shooting before being thrown out in the second half for whining about a charging call. In his second game, he made only one of 10 shots and ended up with six points. And in his third game, he only scored four points in a two-for-11 shooting disaster.

So far Odom seems to be on the opposite track that earned him the NBA’s Sixth Man award last season for being the NBA’s best player coming off the bench. Times sports writer Ben Bolch wrote about Odom’s decline last Sunday in an item with the headline, “Sixth man to nowhere man.”

And Erik Lambert of the website Gather.com said Odom has been ”a non-factor” with the Mavericks, sitting at the root of the problem for the team. Wrote Lambert: “…The 33-year-old big man has let an extended off-season and the family life with wife Khloe Kardashian ruin his drive to succeed.”

How the show will reflect Odom’s lackluster debut remains to be seen — the series ignored Odom getting tossed in the fourth game of the NBA Western Division semifinals last season against the Mavericks when he became combative with his opponents. But so far, the man that Kardashian calls “Lam Lam” has been a “dud dud.”

Sunday night the Dallas Mavericks take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in their first preseason game.

Mavs coach Rick Carlisle described the team’s Friday night scrimmage as a little “rag-tag” and anticipated working out some of the kinks on Saturday. ”The good news is, as far as I know, everybody is still healthy,” he said.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Forwards Brian Cardinal and Brandan Wright didn’t practice Saturday because of a stomach bug.

Cardinal, who was signed this week to his second year with the team, is expected to be ready for the exhibition game against the Thunder, but Wright’s status was unknown.

Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the American Airlines Center, then the Mavs will travel up I-35 to play the Thunder again on Tuesday.

While tonight’s game is preseason play and doesn’t really count, Kevin Durant and the Thunder come back to Dallas Jan. 2 for a rematch of the Western Conference Finals.

The event Mavs fans have been waiting for comes Dec. 25. The Mavericks will raise their 2011 NBA Championship banner up into the rafters before they play the Miami Heat in an NBA Finals rematch at 1:30 p.m. at the AAC on Christmas day.

The Mavs will play 66 games in NBA’s compacted season.

According to ESPN Dallas, Barea is feeling fairly strongly that he’ll end up returning the NBA champion Mavs. “If you want to go by percentages, I think 75 percent I’ll be back in Dallas and 25 percent something else happens,” Barea said, according to the site. “My first option is going to be Dallas.”

The 27-year-old posted career-high averages of 9.5 points, 3.9 assists, and two rebounds per game last season.

This is the second part of a series breaking down the Lakers' potentially troublesome Western Conference opponents.

This is the second part of a series breaking down the Lakers’ potentially troublesome Western Conference opponents.

Team: Dallas Mavericks

Lakers’ record versus Dallas last season: 2-1 in regular season, lost 4-0 in Western Conference semifinals

How Mavericks fared last season: NBA champions

Why Dallas is a threat to the Lakers: They won the NBA title after all, so of course Dallas would immediately be involved in the conversation as one of next season’s title favorites. The Mavericks’ championship run also illustrated the team featuring many assets the Lakers lacked. That included clutch shooting (Dirk Nowitzki), handling adversity (six fourth-quarter comebacks), consistent inside presence (Tyson Chandler) and a consistent bench (Jason Terry, J.J. Barea).

WIth the Mavericks finally clearing the psychological hurdle of imploding in the postseason, they have the confidence and talent to match up with any team, including the Lakers. Plus, Caron Butler will be fully healthy.

Why the Lakers are a threat to Dallas: As talented as the Mavericks are, many of the Lakers’ shortcomings against them proved to be self-inflicting. The Lakers’ problems included a lack of clutch shooting from Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher, Pau Gasol’s disappearing act, Ron Artest’s inconsistent defense and a spotty bench surely won’t be as egregious as it was in the 2011 playoffs. The Lakers’ fatigue, injuries and motivation will also improve.

Meanwhile, Dallas captured lighting in a bottle during its title run. As talented as Nowitzki is, it’s unrealistic to think he can replicate the 27.7 points per game playoff average, including 10.3 in the fourth quarters. As durable as Kidd proved to be, it’s possible he will retire. As much of an inside threat Chandler proved to be, he’s given strong indications he might not re-sign with Dallas. As much as Barea bolstered his bench, he may not return either. Owner Mark Cuban developed a reputation for spending whatever necessary to retain top talent, so every effort will be made to keep the team’s core roster. But part of Dallas’ success last season points to being underestimated, a luxury it won’t have next season.

Verdict: The Lakers-Mavericks matchups will prove to be competitive, but the Lakers will soon reclaim their superiority over the defending champions.

Through parts of the mid-1990s, Dallas Mavericks rotation players Popeye Jones and Tony Dumas were stuck with the gig of reviewing films (without any attention to spoilers, as was evident in their approach to discussing “Old Yeller”) while wearing breakaway pants and home Mavericks uniforms. None of it holds up, which is the point of this post.

Today, for no particular reason beyond the fact that there isn’t much to write about regarding the NBA, we’ve decided to showcase their take on the Farrelly Brothers’ “Dumb and Dumber.” And while Eric Freeman is BDL’s eminent cinephile, I think Popeye and Tony’s take is … actually, no. I can’t. It’s pretty awful.

But watch!

The unfortunate irony behind a player telling his viewing audience that he knows who is “dumb” and “dumber” on the 1996-97 Dallas Mavericks, while adding the caveat that “we ain’t sayin’ no names,” is hopefully not lost on any of you. And by “you,” I mean people like “me” who could enlighten their lives and broaden their intelligence after work every night with books and periodicals, but instead spend their hours chasing down old “SCTV” clips on YouTube until well past midnight.

Also, they watched “Clueless.”

And “Batman Forever.” It’s a pretty good take. Not as good as “Kiss From a Rose,” but a more entertaining review than the movie itself.

Since 2005, Tyson Chandler(notes) has played for five organizations.

Since 2005, Tyson Chandler(notes) has played for five organizations. And it doesn’t appear that he’s seeking stability for next season.

The 7-1 center is coming off an NBA championship year with the Dallas Mavericks, for whom he averaged 10.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. But Chandler isn’t necessarily planning to stick around in Texas. He’ll be a free agent when the next collective bargaining agreement is figured out.

“It’s a great point in my career, and I’m coming up under free agency and there’s a lot of great teams out there, a lot of great opportunities out there, a lot of up-and-building things,” Chandler told ESPN Dallas. “So, I mean, I’ve got to take a look at all that. I’ve got to take everything into consideration, and the good thing is I’m on a good side. I’m coming off an incredible year, so it’s not a situation where it’s worrisome.”

It may be worrisome to Mavs fans, though.

By the time an NBA team wins a championship the entire world has converged on the city and media await every player at every turn. That was certainly the case for the Dallas Mavericks, who won the hearts of NBA fans worldwide as a group of classy, hard-working veterans began their quest to upset the most over-hyped team on the planet in the Miami HEAT. When the global media turns its attention on the last two teams standing in postseason play there are very few stories that go untold, few stones that go unturned as everyone looks for some unique angle to cover. It isn’t always that way, however.

For the bulk of the regular season the press corps covering a given NBA team is relatively small. There are the steadfast beat writers, some local TV and radio personalities, a few national personalities from outlets like ESPN and HOOPSWORLD, and then there are the Associated Press folks. It is one of these AP writers who brings us the latest release from Sports Publishing, an in-depth inside look at some of the greatest stories in the history of the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks.

Jaime Aron has been the Texas sports editor for the AP since 1999, and now he brings sports fans an updated edition of Tales From The Dallas Mavericks Locker Room that includes stories in and around the 2011 championship, and it’s a book NBA fans won’t want to miss.

Aron’s book takes us back to the beginning, with the Mavericks as an expansion franchise in 1978. After failed attempts to bring first the Milwaukee Bucks and then the Kansas City Kings to Dallas, the league finally approved an expansion and the Dallas Mavericks were born. Meet the members of the brain trust who brought the fledgling organization to life, including owner Donald Carter, GM Norm Sonju and first head coach Dick Motta.

Read about the Mavs’ first draft pick, Kiki Vandeweghe, who resented being chosen by the expansion Mavs and eventually forced a trade rather than play for Dallas. It was an inauspicious start for Dallas, but it resulted in their drafting Rolando Blackman the following year, and he turned out to be an incredibly important piece of their franchise from that day forward. The story of how the Mavs then stumbled upon Brad Davis while scouting someone else on the advice of George Karl is just one of the tasty nuggets awaiting you in Aron’s book.

After a trip down memory lane, in which he recounts some of the highlights of the Mavs’ inaugural season, Aron introduces us to the next franchise cornerstone, a young man named Mark Aguirre. With Aguirre, Blackman and Davis in place, Dallas was able to build a strong relationship with their fan base, one that still exists to this day. Soon Derek Harper would join the mix, the Mavericks had an All-Star in Aguirre, and the playoffs came to town.

The 1984 draft will forever go down as a huge missed opportunity for Dallas. They could have drafted Charles Barkley and John Stockton that year, but they passed on both in acquiring two much less notable players. Find out who they were and why the Mavs did what they did in the book . . .no spoilers here!

Sadly, Mark Aguirre would not find long-term success in Dallas, and it wasn’t long before the team decided to trade him. In fact, Aguirre was nearly part of the first-ever multi-league trade. The Mavs had lengthy discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers about a trade that would have brought James Worthy to Dallas and sent Aguirre and Dallas Sidekicks soccer star Tatu to LA. Only a death in the family prevented that deal from going down. It turned out to be a good thing for Dallas, as Aguirre was a huge part of the team that won its first-ever division championship in 1986-87.

That same team also became the first #2 seed to lose to a #7 seed, a collapse that would cost Dick Motta is job. The Mavericks would never win a championship under his replacement, John MacLeod, but they did make it to the Western Conference Finals before one mess after another led to an era of mediocrity for the Mavericks, all of which is detailed in the book.

The Roy Tarpley era was cut all too short by drug suspensions, several head coaches came and went, Jim Jackson, Jason Kidd, and Jamal Mashburn followed Blackman, Davis and Aguirre, and the Mavericks flirted with respectability once again before their personalities clashed and forced them to scrap it all and start over once again . . .this time with a new owner, a new head coach, and a new franchise player.

Mark Cuban and Don Nelson were the keys to turning the Mavericks around, as were their early draft picks – Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki. They very nearly had a third cornerstone in Leon Smith, but his tragic story set the franchise back instead of catapulting them forward. After a very brief flirtation with “shoeless” Dennis Rodman, Michael Finley would finally become the third star the Mavericks needed, and his arrival began a string of 50+ win seasons that is still alive today. While Cuban made plenty of his own headlines with a persistent series of fines, his team climbed the ranks of the Western Conference, even as Nash was traded, Finley was paid to go win a championship with the rival San Antonio Spurs, and a Coach of the Year was born and then fired. Through it all Dirk Nowitzki became the indomitable force that made the Mavericks contenders, which brings us to the end of the book.

A trio of well-respected veterans in Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Jason Terry would help the Mavericks capture their first-ever NBA Championship, the intimate details of which are captured in Aron’s book.

The only knock on Tales From The Dallas Mavericks Locker Room is that the final section, for which it was re-released in current form, glosses over much of the historic 2010-11 season and the championship run. If you’re looking for an in-depth look at the title run itself, you won’t find it here. However, if you’re looking for a book that details at great length the birth, rise, fall and resurrection of an NBA franchise, look no further. The Dallas Mavericks are the NBA Champions, and what better way to celebrate it than with a book that tells the entire story of the franchise?

Jun 9, 2011 – The Dallas Mavericks will play for the final time this season in Dallas tonight as they play host to the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The winner, of course, will take momentum with them back to Miami while the loser will face elimination in Game 6.

Dallas rattled off yet another comeback in Game 4, needing to go on a 17-3 run to take the lead late in the game. Game 4, like Games 2 and 3, had the game decided in the last possession. Mike Miller missed a potential game-tying three pointer as time expired, giving the Mavericks an 86-83 win over the Heat.

The win for the Mavericks was not only necessary, but also quite impressive. Dallas could not afford to go down three games to one to Miami – and they managed to avoid that circumstance despite Dirk Nowitzki having a torn tendon in his finger and a fever of 103. Nowitzki still managed 21 points, despite going 6-19 shooting from the field. The German also added 11 rebounds to account for a double-double.

Dallas’ defense will have to be excellent once again if they look to win Game 5. The Mavericks held LeBron James to eight points on 3-11 shooting, easily one of James’ worst playoff performances ever in Game 4.

Dallas themselves shot only 39.7% from the field in the Game 4 win, but Jason Terry expects that to change. Per Jeff Caplan:

Dallas averaged 100.2 points a game during the regular season, but have managed to score more than 86 points in only one of four games, and have shot better than 40 percent once (48.0 percent, Game 2), having twice finished in the 30s.

“We know we can win any style of game, but we prefer obviously to score 100 points because we know that team over there, that’s not the style they want to play,” Terry said. “So, if we can get to that in this series I think we can take control and it’ll be not as difficult as it has been for us. But, again, those shots that we’ve been missing, I just don’t see us missing those come [Game 5].”

If the Mavericks do start hitting their shots again, they’ll be in excellent shape to win Game 5. Dallas’ defense has been stellar, holding the Heat to under 90 points in two of the four games in the NBA Finals so far.

Tipoff for Game 5 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for 8 p.m. CDT. Televised coverage can be found on ABC.

Jun 7, 2011 – Dirk Nowitzki has written a textbook on comebacks throughout the NBA Playoffs, but for the first time the Dallas Mavericks need a series comeback in the 2011 NBA Finals. The Mavericks, after splitting two in South Beach, fell in Game 3 against the Miami Heat on Sunday, putting Dallas in a precarious position. One more Miami win in Big D in the next two games would give the Heat two chances to close out the championship at home.

In other words, Dallas can survive losing one of the three games scheduled in Texas, but it can’t drop two and reasonably hope to survive. That makes Game 4 on Tuesday (9 p.m. ET, ABC) critical, obviously. All Finals games are critical — it’s the Finals, after all! — but this is where the series hinges on dogfight or desperation.

The Heat defense proved too much to handle for every Maverick but Dirk in Game 3; Nowitzki had a marvelous second half, but got little offensive help and missed a potential game-typing jumper in the closing seconds to hand Miami the win. On the other end, Dallas has played solid defense itself, but has no long-term solution for Dwyane Wade, who has been a killer. DeShawn Stevenson is the preferred defender on Wade, but he’s a minus offensively against normal teams, let alone Miami. That leaves Jason Terry, J.J. Barea or Jason Kidd on Wade. Good luck.

Chris Bosh hit the Game 3 winner for Miami despite a poked eye; he said Monday he feels OK and his vision hasn’t been affected. Brendan Haywood, however, may miss action due to a hip injury. That malady opened the door for seldom-used Frenchman Ian Mahinmi, who suffered the indignity of being crushed by LeBron James on a dunk.

Dallas Mavericks will try to get the upper-hand in their best-of-seven series of the 2011 NBA Finals as they play against the Miami Heat on Sunday night, June 5, 2011, at the American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas, according to a report at NBA.com.

Center stage will be on Miami forward Chris Bosh, as he will be playing his first NBA Finals game against his home town Dallas since turning pro in 2003.

Bosh was a Dallas superstar during his high school days. He led his team to a perfect, 40-0, record and a state title.

After two games, the Heat and Mavericks are locked up at one game apiece. However, Dallas‘s game two victory has shifted the homecourt advantage away from Miami. This means that the Heat needs to get a victory on the road to win the 2011 NBA Finals. This scenario puts the burden on Bosh, as he tries to lead his Miami team to at least a victory over his hometown team.

During the first two NBA Finals games, Bosh averages 15.5 points on a very low 9-of-34 field goal.

In December 15, 2003, Bosh played his first NBA game against Dallas when he was with the Toronto Raptors. Reports say that Bosh was so nervous during that game that he missed a dunk in the early part of the game.

When asked about his homecoming finals game, Bosh said that the “thrill of playing at home is gone. I just concentrate on trying to win games. I’ve been there a bunch of times, played in that arena my fair share of times. I go back all the time. Nothing’s changed, it looks the same, the people are the same. That’s why the thrill is kind of gone. As you get older, it becomes more of a task.”
