The Dallas Mavericks aren’t the National Basketball Association’s only winless team, but they are the only franchise without a victory and a 2011 championship banner hanging above their home court. Off to the worst start by a defending champion in 40 years, the Mavericks again try to pick up their first win Friday (7:30 p.m. CT) and bounce back from a heartbreaking defeat against the Toronto Raptors. Dallas (0-3) won the franchise’s first title with 105-95 win over Miami on June 12, and that could end up being the Mavericks’ last win of the 2011 calendar year if they don’t defeat the visiting Raptors (1-1). While Dallas looked sluggish in its first two games, trailing by as many as 35 points against the Heat and by as much as 33 against Denver, a win was well within reach Thursday against Oklahoma City. The Mavericks led by 12 early and a three-pointer by Vince Carter with 1.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter put Dallas up by one. The Thunder responded with a deep three-pointer by Kevin Durant at the buzzer, sending the Mavericks to a 104-102 loss. With the defeat, Dallas became the first defending champion to start 0-3 since the Boston Celtics lost four straight in 1969-70. While their disappointing start is making headlines, the Mavericks are trying not to pay attention. “I think the more we go out and just play the game itself more, good things happen on the court,” Shawn Marion said. “We’ve got to just go out there and stop worrying about other things and just go out there and just play the game and just play hard.” The Mavericks are off to their worst start since opening 0-4 in 2006-07. They went on to win an NBA-best and franchise-record 67 games that season, but rebounding from a slow start could be more difficult this year because of the lockout and significant roster turnover. Dallas is replacing two key contributors from last season’s team in Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea. Nowitzki still go-to manThe Mavericks’ offence obviously still revolves around Dirk Nowitzki, and he is coming off his best performance of the season, finishing with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Nowitzki had 31 points and 13 rebounds in a 114-96 victory in Toronto on Feb. 27, but a sprained right knee kept him out of the first meeting, an 84-76 loss, snapping the Mavericks’ 10-game home winning streak in the series. The Raptors arrive in Dallas to open a three-game trip after losing to Indiana 90-85 on Wednesday. DeMar DeRozan scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to help Toronto trim a 14-point, fourth-period deficit to two, but it wasn’t enough. DeRozan also played well down the stretch in Monday’s 104-96 win over Cleveland, scoring nine of his 15 points in the final period. Toronto coach Dwane Casey, an assistant with the Mavericks the last three seasons, is thrilled with DeRozan’s late-game exploits, but would also like to see him be more assertive early. “Start off aggressive, that’s one thing I need to do,” DeRozan said. “Just got to get off to a better start, but I love the fourth quarter. It’s fun to me.” Toronto has been strong defensively in its first two games, although it hasn’t faced the stiffest competition. It held the Pacers to 39.5 per cent shooting after limiting the Cavaliers to 41.2 per cent. “We got the concept of the defence and we know what we got to do and when we have to do it,” Andrea Bargnani said. “The effort is there.” Dallas’ defence has been a big reason for its early struggles. It is allowing an average of 108.0 points on 51.8 per cent shooting. Leave your comments on the news below. Posted in nba, Uncategorized | Comments Off

| NBA Finals Update: Coach Erik Spoelstra advices Miami Heat to be aggressive over Dallas Mavericks | |||||||||||||||
By Ma. Maureen Pascual on Jun 5, 2011 in Basketball, Sports, United States • No comments According to several sports sites as of June 4, 2011, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is in no doubt that his team would rebound in Game Three after Thursday’s intense 95-93 defeat to Dallas Mavericks in Game Two of the NBA Finals, leaving the best-of-seven series tied at 1-1. Several reports reveal that, through two games, as the best-of-seven series shifts to Dallas for Sunday’s Game 3, the Heat had indeed attempted a total of 54 3-pointers, compared with 50 free throws. Apparently, in an unexpected turnaround, the Heat eventually shot far more 3-pointers and slightly fewer free throws compared to the Mavericks. Related report quoted Erik Spoelstra saying, “That hasn’t been a successful formula.” “We’re an attacking team. We’re a free-throw-shooting team. The 3-point ball is a weapon for us. It’s a necessary weapon. It has to happen within the context of establishing our game first. We do need to be aggressive. We do need to be an attack team. Our guys understand that. We will be better with that,” he further adds. Tags: Dallas Mavericks, Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat, NBA, NBA Finals update, NBA Game Three

| Dallas Mavericks vs. Miami Heat: A tale of two cities, and of expectations | |||||||||||||||
The Dallas Mavericks face the Miami Heat Tuesday night at Miami’s American Airlines Arena in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The game will be televised, starting at 9 p.m., Eastern time, on ABC.
Boston
The Miami Heat, for all their bluster last summer about the number of championships they were going to win and talk about assembling the “greatest team” in NBA history, have gone about this season – and postseason – in a workmanlike fashion. Skip to next paragraph
They owned a 58-24 regular season record, securing the second seed in the NBA Eastern Conference, and handily dispatched the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, and the Chicago Bulls, owners of the league’s best record, in the the first three rounds of the playoffs. They are relatively young, and, rumors of an injury to Dwyane Wade’s shoulder notwithstanding, are largely healthy. On the other hand, the Dallas Mavericks, with an average player age of 33, are one of the oldest teams in the NBA, and have had to struggle through two post-season series against Portland and Oklahoma City – though along the way they completely humiliated the Los Angeles Lakers in four games in one of the most lopsided playoff sweeps in NBA history. They have matured as a group to the point where they fight through double-digit deficits to win where previously they might not have. The Mavs, with a 57-25 regular season record, are nearly evenly matched with the Heat, though Dallas won the two regular season meetings between the two teams. They’ve accomplished much, even without the services of one of their very strongest players, guard-forward Caron Butler, who is not expected to see any action in the Finals. Jason Terry, in an interview earlier this week, said the team is dedicating their pursuit of the NBA title to Butler. The Heat largely play a perimeter game. They love head fakes, and drawing fouls near or beyond the arc. They also are very fast off the transition, where LeBron James and Dwyane Wade excel in an open path to the bucket with virtually unparalleled athleticism. They have not been as strong inside the paint, where the Mavericks tend to excel. Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks strong forward/center, can score from anywhere, and he is particularly strong at drawing fouls after posting up his defenders. When the two teams met in Dallas last November, the Mavericks won 106-95 – largely through the 48 points they scored in the paint. They will need to keep that pace up this series. | Mavs topple Thunder for West crown | |||||||||||||||
Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks are going back to the NBA finals. Nowitzki swished a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:14 left and Shawn Marion followed with a 3-point play off a steal, the pivotal plays in yet another fourth-quarter comeback, this one sending the Mavericks to a 100-96 victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night that closed out the Western Conference finals in five games. After clawing back from 15 down with 5:04 left in Game 4, the Mavericks were down by six with 4:37 left in this one when they rallied again, outscoring the Thunder 14-4 the rest of the way. Dallas has never won a championship, and neither has any of its players. Nowitzki and Jason Terry were part of the only Mavericks team to make the finals, in 2006. They were up 2-0 and leading late in Game 3, but lost the series to the Miami Heat in six games. Dallas could get another crack at the Heat. LeBron James and Miami lead the Chicago Bulls 3-1 in the Eastern Conference finals. If the Heat win tonight, the finals will begin Tuesday in Miami. If the Bulls win tonight, the finals will begin June 2 in the East winner’s city. “All I can tell everybody is, we ain’t done yet,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban said during the on-court trophy presentation ceremony. Brown will get a four-year deal worth roughly $18 million. With a strong interview last weekend, Brown jumped to the front of the line of candidates for the daunting challenge of succeeding the 11-time NBA champion Jackson with one of the NBA’s iconic franchises. Brown will be the 22nd coach of the Lakers, whose 16 NBA titles trail only the Boston Celtics’ 17 in league history. Although Kobe Bryant endorsed Jackson assistant Brian Shaw for the vacancy, Jim Buss — the Lakers’ executive vice president of player personnel and the son of owner Jerry Buss — became intrigued by Brown after Saturday’s interview.
